It Really Sounds Nasty Out There...

There's talk of snow but we'll see. I may stay indoors. At best I may decide to pop out for my PC and TV listings magazines(the only publications that I purchase)in money terms that comes in at approx £1.50 per week.

I don't have to go out, I could see how the weather goes, wait until another day where I will be going somewhere. They never sell out. I am toying with the idea of having a meal using either the beef or pork mince today. A ready meal may've been a cheaper option but I have all the vegetables and meat that is needed. The mince I have is quite lean, not as much fat but not sure that bothers me, it just is.

Cooking smaller portions(being single)and using ready meals as a guide there is no reason why it needs to be in an oven for ages, I have cheated before and may very well stick it in the microwave. If I make two I have meal that just needs reheating another day.

Most recipes need to be guessed on how much you put into the dish or changed from the instructions because they assume that you are cooking for 2, 4, 6 or even 8 people.

I guess an alternative could be for me to make my own burgers/meatballs. Perhaps an idea for another day.

I am still gearing up to baking bread again and trying something more specialist. I wish I had done much more imaginative meals for Mum and myself though I think that I was a reasonable cook and we had nice meals. Whether I make my loaves by hand and use an oven or the bread machine if I can work out how to use it without the manual.

I'm about to have breakfast...I'll keep it simple toast/marmalade and coffee. Meds already taken. Lunchtime I think its time that I had salad sandwiches again and using up tomatoes, spinach, watercress, rocket, cheese perhaps some ham.

Later I may decide to have a dessert after the main meal(thinking Apple Pie)and custard.

I guess its a day of thinking about food. I would guess for the whole day that will come in at around £2-£3.

Update:Still learning how to cook mince and think I can do better. However, it came out OK and actually tasted better the following day, why, who knows. I also ditched the salad idea and went for corned beef pasty and baked beans for lunch.

We've had a little snow overnight but not a massive amount and the weather is bright and sunny so nothing more has fallen but then again not a lot has thawed either. Slowly getting ready for the bingo tonight but it will be interesting to see if everyone turns up.

If you have a Panasonic breadmaker, I'm happy to tell you how to work it. :)

Otherwise, howabout looking online for the model - or even emailing the manufacterers to ask for a replacement manual.

It always tastes better the next day (chilli, casserole etc) - I guess because the flavours have deepened overnight.

Manual lost due to house clearing. I have a horrible feeling the manual could be in...the loft! In one of many bags that should be cleared, in time they will but getting in and out of the loft isn't easy.

I've been tempted to ask if I can install a proper ladder system or purchase a strong suitable stepladder.

The latter is better because its cheaper and not being my home, I'm just improving it for others if I had to leave.

Thanks about the bread maker...I have found one manual online that may work but will have a better search and may as you suggest contact direct(It was made by Delta)for the discount store Aldi.

It has pre-programmed times for various types of bread but its getting the measurements of the ingredients right but with use of this smaller oven in the main stove that may work quite well as an alternative.

Perhaps the basics don't change that much between machines :-)

I think you are right about some meals tasting better the following day.

It cooked well in the little oven part of cooker and the mashed potato on top browned and crusty.

Next day I portioned it out and heated it in the microwave. It was ready in approx. 5 minutes.

I'm not a big meat eater and I do sometimes baulk at the price meat costs but if rationed and added to meals, its still can be good value.

It still seems to be mainly high in quality.

If I see something costing £4-£5 I may put off buying it but...if that is padded out with vegetables and other ingredients I may get 2-4 meals from that one purchase.

Here's a thought - to try out your bread-maker, buy a packet of bread mix all ready for the breadmaker. You will see on the packet how much liquid to add, and if you pop that in the breadmaker and select the basic bread programme - on a Panasonic it's 01 for a basic white loaf - you can try out your breadmaker!

Also, check Ebay for a manual, just input the make of the breadmaker into the search....something may turn up.

That is brill...I can see 8-9 buttons telling me what bread to expect. There seems to be another that has different weight measurements like 500g/750g and another to change the kind of crust your loaf will have.

I'll get it up and running soon. :-)

Good, be sure to post a photo of your first loaf. ;)

I made a loaf of basic white bread in my breadmaker today

400 grms strong white bread flour
1 teaspoon dried yeast
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
280 mls water.

Put it all in the breadmaker, selected 02 for a rapid bake, and in 2 hours, had a lovely homemade loaf. :)

The above measurements are so easy to remember and make a small loaf. :)
