Gout Update...

It's come on leaps and bounds and as suggested I believe it was mainly caused by the diuretics I was taking and I have cut down on them and I think I have benefited by doing so. But it has left me with a bit of an itch at the base of my big toe but that is more preferable.

Eww, gout. :oP My great-grandmother was diabetic and suffered from gout.

Glad it's a little better.

Thanks,
Who'd have thought something so simple could cause such a lot of problems.

And when you do mention it, it is such a common ailment.

Recurring Gout is usually treated with Allopurinol or even Prednisolone to remove acute inflammation.

The thing is, susceptible people have got to avoid eating purine-rich food.

Thanks Nick, :-)

Guess what...I take Prednisolone but a smaller dose than I used to(for now)and as I have said somewhere I was on two Forosemide tablets daily, then we tried two one day and one the next(Do the same with the steroids)

But after getting Gout I have been taking one Diuretic daily.

Thanks to your information I had a quick look into Purine and my diet seems quite good(But having kidney problems)I can see that my idea of restricting how much meat I eat(which I did myself)and by tending to go days without or have smaller portions(restricting protein intake is good)

At least most fruit, vegetables, drinks are ok. I don't drink a lot of alcohol so again it looks as though I can still have a little tipple.

And the few foods that have Purine that I do eat contain moderate amounts.

I can see where the idea that Gout was a "rich man's condition" in the past because many of the foods are or were quite expensive and the ordinary members of the population could not afford whereas I nearly said people today can so they also get Gout.

But in my case as income shrinks my access to such foods will reduce again no doubt. We may go the other way not getting enough good food into us.

I guess Moderation and variety is the way to go as it always has been with me...

How interesting,
Just looked at this and though my diet is more varied when I bother more, this could almost be my normal diet and I have been doing it almost by instinct...

And a lot of my favourite foods are safe or low in Purine.

I had also forgotten that Gout is associated with Arthritis(and with my mobility problems and sometimes uncomfortable sleep due to swollen joints)it all fits in.

And I see you have to watch Gout doesn't cause kidney damage so again it is all connected.

In an earlier post Ceridwen mentioned cherries and they are mentioned in this article as a food to eat.

What about cranberry juice? I drink that once a week or so to help my kidneys with the meds.

I wonder if that would be helpful?

Another very good idea Jan(it is good to have ideas suggested)sometimes you hear of something new or are reminded of something and it has a good reputation and though juice not from concentrate is said to better, if all you can afford is from concentrate, I'd still buy it. I do look for special offers, don't we all.

If I manage to avoid a taxi fare(return) these days, I think that's approx £6 saved and that can either mean I can buy another £6 of shopping or you can pretend your shopping is a little bit cheaper.

We are all having to cut back and being more careful with money isn't a bad thing but it is awful feeling as though you have to avoid spending on something a little special.

I have got into the mindset that it's wrong. I think I will always feel that way. I may have no choice, I'd like to think that I am wrong.

That sounds familiar, Gildy.

Guilt over something so trivial. As a matter of fact, we just had Chinese food yesterday ($15)which we hadn't had in aaages, and even though it fed us for two days I still felt bad about spending the money.

Oh well, if that's the worst of it, I'm a lucky, lucky woman! :o)
