Whose That Coming Down The Street?

Posted by Picasa

It's the new residents of my street...Yes, the ducks are back. As yet I have no idea where they have taken up residence but they do seem to like going for a walk...

Brilliant, and clearly not worried about humans being too close.

Gildy, there are lots of mallard ducks around here. Most of them sleep on the water, where it's safer for them. But when it's wet outside, I'll sometimes see two of them, a drake and a hen, sleeping on the grass. They twist their heads around and tuck their beaks into their shoulder feathers. It seems like it would be uncomfortable, but I guess it works for them. As long as a dog or cat doesn't arrive on the scene, they are ok. I suspect they are light sleepers.

Thanks for posting the photo.

Thanks Span and North Star,
If it was practicle, I think I would quite like to have them in my garden but how safe they would be? In the front garden it is surrounded by a hedge and it has a grass lawn(no pond though)and the back garden is much better but access is difficult and I said about the danger of dogs but maybe cats could be too.

When I had my blood test yesterday I was told by the Nurse that some Swans had been killed at the boating lake so maybe the Ducks would be no safer?

Don't get the impression it's a large boating lake, it's not but if mobility was easier it is quite near here 10-15 minutes walking distance, it's been there decades and it is quite nice to sit and watch the wildfowl.

It is situated amongst a kind of housing estate so in theory it is a way to intergrate humans and animals have them live together.

That could be why these ducks are seeming unafraid of Humans which could be either a good or bad thing.

I have seen ducks as you say North Star go to sleep in what would appear a very uncomfortable position...As you can see I have added an extra image to the blog entry.

Thanks for the bonus photo, Gildy!

The ducks I see will let you get to within about 5-7 feet of them, but if you come any closer, they will start quacking and move away.

For twisted reasons, a few people seem to derive sick pleasure from harming animals. This past winter, there were a few widely reported stories of animal cruelty near where I live. In one case, someone on a snowmobile ran over and killed 57 mallard ducks. In another case, three men on snowmobiles ran down and killed five deer, horribly torturing a few of them first. Those men were arrested and charged with felonies.

I don't understand it myself NS...it happens here too but I only find out if it gets reported in the news. By here I mean in the UK...when I mentioned it to someone in the Dr's surgery I was told at the boating lake on our town a number of swans had been killed but I don't know how recently.

If Baldinio was on here, his town has a river running through it and there are Ducks and Swans and all kinds of wildfowl mixing with the public and you can get really close to them but the Swans can get quite defensive.

I know because I often spent many happy times there. But back then I did not know him...
