Well, The Weather Has Been Bad...

most in the UK have seen it on tv or experienced it first hand. Floods/gale force...homes evacuated etc...

I was going to go out just to avoid getting stir crazy but then I thought, I have plenty of food and the basics so thought better of it and if I go out chances are I'll spend money.

It's been another cold day and even under the continental quilt or is that duvet I've been cold. My feet were like blocks of ice and with cold feet, the rest of you is...so as I have all these different things to help keep me warm even if the house isn't I took some tips from friends I talk to on the net and already one has worked so with some further twisting I may get even warmer...

This time I put a fleece blanket under a bed sheet on the mattress and I already feel quite toasty but as I have a mattress protector over it, I probably can get away without having to wash it very often if at all. It was a little shorter than I hoped but that area is under the pillow so it doesn't matter.

If it gets really cold I have other options like(and this another suggestion...)putting a summer quilt on the mattress and a winter one over me. Then I have brushed cotton PJ's and bed socks...not forgetting the old faithful Hot Water Bottle or electric blanket. So that should keep the central heating bill down a bit. I hope...

After a few days of eating well and trying to take an interest I only bothered with a cheese and tomato sandwich and some toasted buttered teacake with cheese but hope to have more later today.

I have spent the night watching TV and eating sweets and chocolate. Even had a couple of Mr Kipling Viennese Whirls(Perfectly OK)but they had a best before date for June.

I'd like to say something exciting had happened but things are just ticking over at present(I'll probably regret saying that)but that's better than having a nasty shock or a big worry to sort out.

I suspect that I am in the lull before the storm.

That is the problem when you have got nothing to do,you just keep spending money LOL

Ask your energy supplier about cavity wall insulation, that keeps the heat in and if your on benefits should not cost you anything.

I'm not sure how your house is set up, Gildy, but when it's cold we close off the un-used or rarely used portions of the house.

Also, cooking can also do double duty as a house warmer, don't forget. :o)

Anon,
I have been good regarding the spending of money or rather not spending it :-) and to be honest as income goes down, I could not spend as much as I used to anyhow so I have learned to "Cut my coat according to my cloth"

I am so happy that I purchased items whilst able.

The ideas that you suggest Jan have been mentioned to me so it seems a popular solution closing sections of my home off. I need to buying better and lined curtains too and closing off areas.

Especially keeping the door of the rooms that I use closed.

It is amazing how many people use the heat from cooking meals in a kitchen for extra warmth but where once the kitchen was lovely and warm. The landlords have put so many ventilation grills in the room(due to changes in health and safety)that room is always cold and you want to cook your meal and get out as quickly as possible.

I listened to a programme about the changes coming that affect people like me answering listeners questions(I wasn't chosen)but it looks as though the benefit I fear being withdrawn will be amongst other plans but no one knows when you'll be chosen to be given the third degree.

It will take up to 4 years so hopefully you might be called in at the end of that period or sooner. No one knows...

I don't know whether I can get a lodger in(I hope so)but perhaps they will allow you to do this if working but may not, if receiving benefits. Something else to look into at some point.

That fleece blanket that I added to the bed did make quite a difference.

I cannot explain why but the house is warmest from approx midnight until 4pm and is at it's coldest between 4pm and midnight. So I cannot say the house is getting warmer because temperatures outside are improving.

Tonight I have had a muffin with bacon and a fried eggs inside)and am drinking a bottle of cider.

I'll probably have a desert of some kind later and a coffee.

Perhaps in the night some fruit, milk and cereal.

Fleece is a miracle fabric! We had a sale on those little throw blankets a few years ago, they were like $1 apiece, so I bought a bunch of them and sewed them together to make larger blankets.

Very, very warm!

Jan

(I just happened to think, you can also use fans to move warmer air from one room into a colder room...we've done that too)

I've never known fleece be talked about as much as now and your idea of sewing them together is a great idea. I probably could do that but my sewing would not win any prizes but who is going to see/worry about that?

The only time a little sewing machine could be handy but for the amount I usually do probably a waste of time.

Actually, this particular project is fine for folks who don't do much sewing. You can use a yarn or tapestry needly which is big and yarn which is much easier to work with. I just used a whip stitch which is the easiest one.

I also made one for my brother who gets horrible ache in his legs when the weather is cold or damp.

I took two and sewed them end to end, then flipped one end up to make a pocket and sewed up the pocket-sides. He sticks his feet into the pocket and the backside of it keeps his calves warm, the front then goes over his legs so it keeps him warm when he watches TV. So easy and cheap and it works really well.

Lots of things you can do with fleece. :o)

I think that is a great idea Jan, I think where I am failing is not using a whip stitch which I need to learn.

Someone mentioned that they found something like a cushion that you can put a hot water bottle in and it has a kind of pocket and you slip your feet into it whilst sitting but your adaption of creating a kind of pocket to slip your feet into a fleece blanket is a similar idea and I suppose you could put a HWB in that...

So far the one fleece has made a difference and with the thermal socks on so far I have not used a HWB or considered using the electric blanket I purchased. But at least I have it.
