As Good As His Word...

A knock at the door...a postman waiting...with package!

My signed autobiography from Nicholas Parsons has arrived.

For anyone who does not know him, click on the link and you can see a quick video of him working with a beloved comedian from 50 years ago, Arthur Haynes(I guess he was approx 36 years old then)and he also crops up talking about the comedian as he is now approx 88 years old.

I don't know how long this will be available but his most famous radio show was put on TV years ago by a commercial TV station and they thought it was a failure but earlier this year the BBC had another go and it did well. I couldn't see it as it was shown at the time Mum was very ill and then in the Nursing home for approx a month but I have discovered some of them are on You Tube so I am going to give them a look in the next day or two...so are split into two halves but this one is complete.

Just A Minute

He was very interesting and he has worked with so many of "The Greats" of British Entertainment"

A quick look through the book and there is much more than he featured in his one man show approx a week ago.

A while back he had charity auction of some of his clothes- I don't know who would want a 1970s blue velvet jacket from Sale of the Century..but there you go

He always is dressed smartly anon, for his show he had a kind of striped blazer in looked like possibly silk.

I've read the preface and I think the book is going to be quite an interesting read.

I think I saw the programme that you mention and some time ago there was a programme where he went back to his childhood home...

Also the studio that Sale of the Century used to be produced which has been closed and is no longer used for tv.

I don't buy many books and rarely autobiographies, most that I have read have been from the library but having seen his autograph I know it is a genuine signature and he did say that he would not be home until Thursday and by Friday it was in the mail...

Now I have some earplugs coming in the mail...I tried a hearing test online and both ears heard the same amount of sound...

Whether I am ok or have loss of hearing I have no idea, some lady read numbers out on a bed of white noise and I managed three rounds in each ear...

But as three music shows will have me three rows from the front(big band and a pop group)I'm taking no chances and these are aid to be really good ear plugs.

They say I will hear the music but save my ears...

Better than cotton wool. I may see some more shows in the future so I will keep them ready...just in case.

I had a quick look through the book and you always believe people in TV earn large amounts(perhaps this wasn't bad for the time)but initially the fee for SOTC was somewhere around £350.

Ok more than someone working in many daily jobs but not that much really. And tv work can dry up reasonably easily.

Yep one word in the wrong place and your TVcareer can be over. I think SOTC use to get 20 million viewers? more than The Persuaders which I think Roger Moore got a million pounds, but tax was 90% for people like him in those days and why he cleared off to Switzerland.

:-) Anon

I doubt many of today's performers will have the longevity of those I have watched on tv or seen recently on stage. Either because they get out of the business as soon as possible or the media and public lose interest in them quickly.

I posted about this in a different post. :oP

But I think it would have been really easy for him to shrug that off. It's a real credit to him that he followed through and sent it along. And what a treasure to have! :o)

And come on! Who doesn't just did a blue velvet jacket! ;o)

You are right Jan on all counts. He has always been well dressed. You know...it was asked who would wear a blue jacket, I might not have reason to now but I would ;-)

I used to have a lovely jacket in a kind of velvet fabric which was a kind of gold colour.

I bought two jackets at the charity shop the other day 99p each($1.62)

They'll need some alteration but they look as good as new.

They may never be worn but at least I have some in case I attend any official function.

It's funny one is like a jacket I gave away not long before or was it after I lost Mum(Pinstripe)it no longer fit me(it was part of a suit I used to wear for work in a jewellers shop...and the other looks like one my Dad used to wear in a very small check.

Pity I cannot find trousers to match, I may some day.

Its good to see clothes being reused but sad that probably most are the collections of people who have passed away but they can't use them any more.

Most charity shops charge more but for leisure shirts/jumpers/coats and jackets this one isn't bad and at that price.

As they are all obviously washed or cleaned I do wonder how they make a profit at such a low price.

If it's anything like here, the clothes are donated and they have facilities on sight to do the cleaning, in most cases anyway.

I'm really glad to see old clothes getting some use again. We rarely buy anything new. It's a waste to spend $30 on a pair of jeans (and those are cheap) as opposed to $1 for a pair that are already broken in and still have a lot of wear. And besides....Retro is "IN"! :o)

I don't go too many places, so I don't need a lot of clothes. I have a "goin' to meetin'" outfit and a few pants and shirts I can mix and match. I really don't need much more than that.

My sister just bought me a new blouse for my birthday. That's the first new thing I've had in two years at least.

It's nice to have something new, and it always makes you feel good, but I really don't "need" it.

She knows I don't spend on myself much so she likes to buy me something once in awhile. Especially if it's on sale.

She's blessed by the Shopping Goddess. I've seen her buy a leather jacket for my son that was originally $150 for $15. If it's not a really good deal she doesn't buy.

We were all raised that way. Waste was a four letter word in our family. :oP

I remember you writing about mending your clothes and it really struck a chord with me. I do a lot of mending. It doesn't take much time and you can really get a lot more use out of things.

There are now websites where you can trade clothes. So you get new things without having to buy.

I suppose that's one good thing that's coming out of all of this. People are re-thinking how they use things. I think we've been a throw away society for way too long.

It's good to see folks talking about how much they've saved on an item as opposed to how much they spent, don't you think?

It's a much needed paradigm shift. Just wish it didn't have to come at such a price. :o(

Well most of my clothes are not worn out so are years old but I don't suppose anyone would know and though it makes you feel good to bother to dress up "For Yourself!"

Being on my own in the house I stick to a few things and re-use them.

What I have probably would last me the rest of my life but an odd thing at 99p won't break the bank.

I don't mind being thrifty and frugal but unfortunately its getting worse than that, they are piling the worry on those who can least manage by increasing how much you have to spend on the essentials and at the same time are taking more off you.

And income continues to reduce or is frozen.

Many of us think there is something going on and we are not getting the truth in the media or from the politicians but you have to be careful that it doesn't sound like one of those conspiracy theories.

We have some rumblings about certain things happening in Europe that look a bit suspicious and of course we have the carry on over the Euro and Portugal, Italy and Spain are in a lot of trouble and you really don't want to know what is happening in Greece...

Much is being kept out of the media...and I don't think that is an accident.

We are having the same problem. We don't know much other than the idiots running for president (and only two of them at that). But I guarantee you we have no problem finding out about Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt!

Priorities...right? :oP So stupid. You really have to hunt for real news.
