Thinking Of Eating More Today...

Chicken casserole prepared in the slow cooker(Vegetables/gravy and potatoes)I think and so easy to prepare.

When I have Breakfast(when)possibly cereal, fruit and milk(for an extra 10p I am now buying small one litre cartons(more likely to use that size)and not waste it but depending on which I purchase they both have a different variety of added vitamins so seems a good buy to me...also though fresh it has a longer sell by date on them.

I have some lovely yogurts in the house(I am fairly new to yogurt)so may have one of those later in the day. Limited editions on most I have in the fridge but they were all on special offer(half price)or to buy four it was £1.75 but for another 25p I could have eight!

I would like to reorganise my fridge/freezer soon and ave everything neat and tidy and in food storage boxes or freezer bags with dates on them and if everything is stored in uniform containers, I should be able to get more in the fridge/freezer, it will be easier to move around and see what I have.

Well the other day it was a book by Nicholas Parsons that arrived, now I am waiting for my ear plugs...good job it is a one off payment and I had some money to afford them. They look good(they are said to be the best)and are being sold by the RNID(Royal National Institute For the Deaf)

They have a new name now apparently but the same organisation. Not being many places where there is loud noise I haven't considered them before so if I have any hearing loss already I am unaware but now that I have been to a few theatre shows and in particular I will now be at some where I will be only a couple of feet away from the stage and they are big bands and pop groups I think this is a good idea.

If they are only used for these few shows and never again, they've served their purpose and if I do manage to get to more shows in the coming years I am prepared...

Ear Plugs

First show that they'll be put to most use stars Stacey Kent(US artist)on a big tour at present all over the place, Brazil, Turkey, UK etc...and when I see her she will have been the UK only a few days and after my concert jets out to some exotic country again so though Neil Sedaka is just a few miles away and had I known I might have gone there, it should be a good night and I hope plenty of people turn up. She is still one of today's top international artists.

I'll have to let quite a lot of shows go sadly. I see the venue where Neil is appearing has Mary Chapin Carpenter and Don Maclean coming soon too...and I bet it is sold out but the John Wilson Orchestra is appearing there too. It's too difficult to get there using buses. The tickets aren't badly priced. I'm in the wrong part of the county I guess.

Oh I love frozen! We get granola in bulk because it's a good healthy snack for my husband and the oats help bring down his cholesterol. I like putting some in my yogurt with a sliced banana. It's a great breakfast or just as a snack.

Yogurt is also really good frozen. Sort of like ice cream but not as sweet and probably better for you.

(My California is showing isn't it. :oP )

You know I wish now that I had worn earplugs during all those rock concerts years ago. I could really use my hearing now and tinnitus is a pain in the nether regions. :o/

I've never heard of Stacey Kent. What are some of her songs?

You know Jan,
I am not really sure that I have been to what could be called proper rock concerts so I have missed out too on some memories ;-)

When you think of the actors and music acts I have missed over the last twenty years.

Why? Well, I suspect venues were quite a distance to travel to and perhaps they were expensive.

And then work and other circumstances get in the way.

Also, perhaps my "Pop" groups were mainly in the 60's and early 70's.

Most of the music concerts I saw we were probably not too close to the stage and when you came out your ears were not ringing or dull.

And many of those I saw were more in the Easy Listening genre(We did see Jack Jones)

But I have had odd events where that has happened.

But these few shows at the new theatre I am very, very close.

If I never ever get to any more in the years to come at least I am protected for the shows where there is a big band and a pop concert with the Searchers.

The speech productions(A play in June)and sort of one man shows where they just talk aren't a problem.

Having booked so far ahead I hope I don't miss them due to illness or if I was made to work under the new rules(though I know I am not well)the hours are not in the evening when transport is more difficult or would get in the way of attending an odd show.

I hope the employer might be understanding and let me switch things around.

I probably have some hearing loss(age related)I did a test online and managed to hear a lady reading numbers whilst white noise played and in both ears I managed three levels. Rightly or wrongly I got the impression perhaps I was supposed to hear more.

But I'm quite happy, there could be some wax there. Yuk!

I am amazed that they cost so much, there was another company offering cheaper but they looked similar but I decided it was best to go with the charity that is recognised for working for and with the deaf just as we have another that works with the blind.

Tinnitus causes a lot of misery for many people to a lesser or greater amount. I probably have some too but don't seem to suffer the really weird noises I hear about(thank heavens)and for now.

Stacey Kent...I'll add a link to her website in the main post this comment is connected to but put it here too

http://www.staceykent.com/

and here's some You Tube videos...

http://www.youtube.com/artist/stacey_kent

She's playing quite a lot of itimate venues from the itinerary she is following, it may turn out she is not with a big band but perhaps a quartet of perhaps a guitarist, base player, drums and piano. But I don't know that until I go.

In fact the You Tube material suggests that she is on a similar stamp to Diana Krall and Norah Jones...

Granola,
I think I could eat that I have certainly heard of it. A quick search suggests it is similar to muesli.

I have some muesli in my food store but there is this recipe that says that you can make your own(if you could be bothered)

http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/1590/goodforyou-granola

There is a way to put direct links into the comments area of a blog and I have forgotten how to do it :-(

So you'd have to copy it and put it into a search engine to see it!

Another look and I found some that is available in the shops here but I don't know if its in my local supermarket and how much it costs(might be expensive but worth trying as a treat and whilst I am able)

http://www.jordanscereals.co.uk/products/cereals/super-granola/super-berry-granola?gclid=COSHpd3bwbICFc93fAod_W0A8Q

If it is expensive I could probably still have it but not every day.

Now frozen yogurt...there's a thought, if I can get my freezer organised and create space some items I have to use up quickly might last longer.

I need lots of small uniform food storage boxes(probably more than I have now)and use freezer bags more too...

I am quite a new convert to yogurt. But always think it is overpriced so if I see an offer I'll go for it.

At present my fridge is full of the stuff...and there are some limited edition flavours, some were half price £1.75 and an offer on another type was for four but for another 25p you got eight!

At present I am buying fresh milk but paying another 10p a litre it has a longer shelve life and has added vitamins so that seems quite a good deal.

Found some Granola but for £1.50 less I found something almost the same and more of it and if I add extra fresh fruit it is as good as, Supermarket own brand but these days that can be as good as a well known brand...

It's late but in the Slow Cooker I have a chicken casserole of sorts going on(Leeks, garlic, broccali, cauliflower, celery, carrot, gravy and mini chicken fillets)and roast potatoes...so if I manage that I won't come to any harm(I reckon that is coming in at around £1.50($2.44)so a little more than usual but not bad I suppose...

As I have only had a yogurt all day you could say that is all I have spent on food for today.

This stupid laptop won't play You Tube videos, as it's the laptop Columbus brought over with him. :oP

I do know Diana Krall and Norah Jones though, so I get the idea. I like them both.

Wow! That is expensive yogurt. It's way cheap here, so it's not such a big deal. We use store brands which are really good on the whole.

Granola...I know you can make it, but I never have. That's pretty cheap here too, so it's just as easy to buy it and there are lots of varieties. We get it in bulk so it's off brand as well.

As for the containers, if you're not planning on storing for months, you can reuse containers. If your concerned about ice crystal formation you can take a large-ish piece of plastic wrap (cling film?) and push the center on top of the food so that the whole surface of the food is covered and up over the sides of the container. It works well for fairly short storage times and it doesn't cost anything...well except for the plastic wrap.

We do that a lot and it works well.

Thanks for the tip regarding how to freeze items...

Looked at the previous post, bit of a jumble some information missed out.

I'll try that again...

On offer, four yogurts £1.75($2.84) but for another 25p you have eight.

The others are normally six for £3 but were on offer at £1.50($2.44)but back to the usual price yesterday.

Own brand are sometimes cheaper.

I like the idea of buying in bulk but as a single person and on a limited income it's difficult.

I would like to see(and someone must be doing this)more food cooperatives. Where you pay a subscription or decide between members what products they like, order it and then share the products at a lower price, so you get good quality food at reasonable prices.

The food could be ordered from various sites on the internet or cash and carry outlets that usually supply retailers/caterers.

Each town could have a premises that people could go to directly or pay a small fee towards having goods delivered to their homes.

Especially good for those without their own transport. If they are on limited money(because of being on welfare/ill/low wages)

We are being affected by Government policies, price rises in the shops(they say this will be particularly bad this year because of recent crop failures in the States/Russia due the drought)Here because of wet weather.

Then we have the commodities market where people make money on the back of something we need to live.

And then the price of energy(Electric and gas)it is getting so high that people are doing without, not a case of using less to help the environment, just that they cannot afford enough to stay warm.

There's nothing wrong putting an extra jumper on or using fleeces and blankets but in a modern society where you may not be able to use any, there is something wrong.

If I was to use no electric/gas I still have to pay a standing charge just for the meter and the fact that their is a supply to my home(If I want it)so they can still take approx £300($488)off me annually and I have to pay that before I use any energy.

I keep my heating off as much as possible, heat the water as little as I can and most of the time I keep lights off.

As I write this, electric wise I have a fridge/freezer on, this laptop and a radio and nothing else.

And I think you'd have unrest in the States if you were paying what we pay for petrol(Gas)to use cars...£1.41($2.29)unleaded, £1.46($2.37)Diesel and these aren't gallons but litres. And we all know how small a litre is when you look at a carton of fruit juice. Most of the cost is due to various taxes that go to the Government.

Gildy, granola isn't as healthy as oats because they tend to add syrup etc to bind it all together.
Better to just use dry oats and maybe some fruit. In fact dry oats poured over fresh fruit (any) then 'wetted' with yoghurt (plain, unsweetened naturally!) is perfect.

Ah. Yes, that price for yogurt sounds more right.

As for buying in bulk, the store I go to has the items in dispensers, so you can get as much or as little as you want. You just aren't paying for the packaging. You take it home in plastic bags (sort of like what you use with vegetables) then you can put them in your own containers when you get them home.

We are getting more food co-ops here. It's really perfect for it as we are an Ag based community.

About the gas prices...yes. We'd go off, no doubt. We're paying close to $5 per gallon, and no ones happy about it. Luckily I don't go anywhere so it's not too much of an issue.

It depends on the Granola, Span. Here we have organic so it's all natural ingredients...but I'm in California and that's sorta how we roll here, all though we have the junky ones available too. :oP

I like vanilla yogurt, myself. Just enough sweetness and mixes great with everything. :o)

Yesterday, when I was in the SM I found the Granola I fancied, the box was quite small and the price was approx £5($8.11)

I wonder if food coop's may take off here.

When a documentary aired about Food Banks some weeks ago, they showed a couple running a kind of coop from home so people could get cheaper fresh vegetables but they were using their home and there were vegetables and boxes everywhere so their was a mess, I don't know if that is acceptable or would be allowed in many cases.

We had one of those kind of stores you mention where you scoop out what you need from a container and take it home and use your own containers, it closed and I cannot think of another locally, I think it would do very well now if someone started such a shop again now.

Found some food coop's...not many and the nearest is approx 1.5 miles away but the problems of having to use a bus, paying the fare, it's probably not really any cheaper(and it only does fruit and veg)

The ones that offer more variety and get supplies from local farmers and dairies are much further away.

And no one seems to be buying the items that are sold in supermarkets and selling them at a lower price which could be done.

So it is obviously a plan in it's infancy.
