I Said That I Would...And I Have
I'm not sure that we have a complete set of cutlery or dinner service. Does anyone these days? How many of us entertain and have dinner parties? I'm not sure that I have ever attended a formal dinner party in a home or thrown one.
Well, there are only two of us and as long as we are able to find a plate, a bowl, cup or mug to put food on, that's all that matters. You would not believe how difficult it is to buy cups and saucers separate and not in a set unless you are able to get to a departmental or specialist store in a larger town or city.
There are some beautiful but un-necessarily expensive items you can buy but hey, over the last few months so many have been broken, is there any point buying them? Sometimes, plain simple white porcelain takes some beating.
I'm happy with these grey coloured cereal bowls I managed to find and can be used for a variety of foods, they are reasonably priced and the design is good and solid.
But I have to admit to liking a fine bone china mug as opposed to a big chunky mug. The plain mugs seem to be no longer being bought in by Tesco's so I suspect the mug with the scroll work will the next to be no longer available. So I may have to get a duplicate in case of accidents.

Gildy, I'm a heavy mug person...NO!!...you know what I mean! I can 'take' the fine china cups but with mugs I don't trust them!
Funnily enough the place to go for individual mugs is a tourist centre at some local attraction (castle/museum/cathedral...) failing taht there's always IKEA but I'm assuming there's not one near you.
I like that bowl - simple and functional. i've got a few low 'soup' bowls and I'm forever spilling stuff (I'm afraid the easy solution of putting less in the bowl just doesn't seem to have infiltated my psyche)
I think its a fair point that a deep bowl is better and the extra space allowed is more likely to avoid spilling the contents :-)
Previous bowls were more delicate and yes, more in the style of those Chinese willow patterned design that everyone seemed to once own. And like you I am less likely to worry that I have a bowl suitable say for cereal, soup or desert.
If it's a bowl, I'll use it for whatever I am eating at the time.
Anything with liquid in it, Mum will not keep it level, if anything can be spilt, she'll often do so, a cup of tea, cereal, soup. She gets distracted and you see the hand drop and you know the contents will likely as not will spill...I'm always having to remind her.
It's not a problem with memory as such, just a habbit as far as I can see. And I get jumpy if she goes near a tv or some electrical item with a cup in hand in case water gets into it(I've told the story how she managed to get milk into my satelite receiver)and almost cost me the price of a new system(but it did result in a repair bill of £50+)
So you can imagine I would not be happy to have her near my computer with a tea or coffee.
Even though accidents happen to ayone and I'm not perfect either.
Oh, I've used heavy mugs and your idea is good regarding picking something up at a tourist centre.
My usual mugs until recently featured radio stations(surprise, surprise)and/or cartoon characters like Bugs Bunny, Sylvester, Daffy Duck etc...so a big kid at heart.
I think I downsized to smaller bone china types to avoid being tempted to pour out a lovely big mug of tea or coffee because of the water retention. And well, just carried on using them.
I'm just wondering how long it will before one is broken.
I actually prefer the deep French bowls - the type you used to get in French cafes for drinking chocolate. I don't drink tea so I'm a mug man for drinking purposes. For cereal I'm a complete victim of merchandising and have a 2006 World Cup bowl, it's supposed to be half a football.
As for dinner parties the last one I went to, many years ago, ended up with nearly everybody drunk, except me - because I don't drink!
Dinner parties...not for a while but 'back in the day' it was a fairly common occurance. Not many 'black tie' but a few.
Nowadays the only time I eat out is with clients and the only time I 'eat in' is when someone else cooks! :-)
Remember Gildy last year I knocked a small half drunk cup of coffee into my very expensive Sony Laptop?
I completely ruined it and lost everything.
So you are right to be anxious about any liquid being nearbye.
Sounds awful saying about Mum being stopped from getting close to electrical items. It keeps her safe and that's the main reason...saves some costly bills too :-)
Nice to see you Rupe...
