Lets Give Some More Publicity...

To those companies/individuals trying to promote quality foods on a smaller quantity...

The other day I purchased Strawberry Jam with Champagne and Sweet Cider Chutney from a stall run by Cherry Tree Preservatives but the nearest they come to this area is Catterick in Yorkshire. I now understand that these are franchises and there is another to be found in Durham Market square most Saturdays so that can be found again...Durham also has a Farmers Market.

So some of the food producers I mention may be near you or something similar...

It would appear that the best one takes place in Barnard Castle and it attracts a very big selection of food and drink from 4 counties(Yorkshire, Durham, Cumbria and Northumberland)I hope to attend that soon.

The other producer that was immediately interesting is Kitty's Ginger Wine based in Blyth in Northumberland. They don't have a website as such but they do attend some food festivals and seemingly Durham at certain times in the Cloisters of Durham Cathedral.

I see that they are attending Alnwick Food Festival in September...if money was no object I would have come home with a bottle or two it was very nice...

Now to publicity for a local brewery that deserves to be a success and is only 7 miles away The Black Paw Brewery is based in Bishop Auckland Co. Durham, website is being redesigned at present but it has a facebook account and a Twitter presence. And at least the brewery is getting out and about in the community.

You know, the return to smaller farms, buying local and sustainability seems to some good things that are coming out of this horrible economy.

Always have to find a little ray of sunshine somewhere!

They work really hard...I'm complaining about not being able to reach some of the markets but if each area had a decent market serving their own area and were supported well by the locals they could all survive and the local population could benefit by not having to travel as much as they do now and that would be better for the enviroment too.

It would be nice if the older people in the community could benefit too.

In a way the farmers Market is not unlike a food cooperative. Returning to good old fashioned values.

I just read recently they they're started to do city planning around community farms. So that the farm is central and the town grows around it.

Everyone can work in it if they like and benefit from the harvest. Fresh organic fruits and vegetables for either exchange for work or not much money.

Isn't that a wonderful idea? I just love that. :o)

My worry is that over here those who rent areas to local food producers to set up their stalls will become greedy. Some are fair and charge a reasonable rent or work with the producers. I get the impression that others keep taking all that they can.

Think about it...there is the cost of producing the goods, promotion, renting a pitch, the cost of petrol to transport goods to various fairs and events, no doubt there will be taxes and VAT to be paid, then there is all the jars, packaging, cartons, bags, printing costs, perhaps little drinking cuos or disposible items to give samples to potential customers.

This could be the difference between failure and success. The worry is that these events work better if free and people come and spend money in the community but there is concern that those running them now are doing all they can to charge a fee to attend them.

One happening soon is charging £8 just to go in. That would keep from attending.
