Taxes...

Technically and it is right...The Bedroom Tax is not a tax. It is a way of reducing help the state gives towards the rent that a tenant pays to stay in a property. But it is as good as a tax because income will be reduced further.

But in our history Governments have always looked for other ways to raise taxes and one of the longest was the Window Tax.

And in the previous blog entry you may have seen the idea of a politician to avoid paying the bedroom tax is similar to how some beat the window tax by bricking up some of the windows.

There was even a tax on powdered wigs which were worn in the 1700's-1800's. Well the tax was levied on the powder that was used.

The bedroom tax is a worry and has got the majority of publicity but many more will hurt with all the other changes coming...

Help with legal costs for those who are on low incomes is being taken away(and that includes from people who lose their benefits)and need to appeal. The Citizens Advice Bureau which helps many of the poorest who need advice is having its budget slashed by millions.

Many more will be using Food Banks and Soup Kitchens.

Sadly, these articles put it all into perspective...

Benefit cuts: Monday will be the day that defines this government

Food is now the ultimate class signifier

Dionne Warwick (who help fill the soundtrack of our lives) has been declared bankrupt due to an incompetent accountant and is having her property seized -she owes about $10 million to the tax man and he is one creditor who never relents in getting it back-

so if you think you have got problems

Yes whether you are rich or poor if you owe they come looking for you. Usually(and I am not suggesting it is so in this case)accountants are used for two reasons...to avoid paying tax or to see that everything is in order.

If it can be proven the accountant/accountancy firm mishandles a clients affairs without their consent or being involved it seems unfair to chase after them.

There are many cases where people find themselves financially challenged sometimes because of a family member mishandling the estate, I believe a famous case was Doris Day and she had to really throw herself into work to build up her finances again.

Hi Gildy, still beating your drum I see :-)

The food banks sprouting up are a real political issue and are being bigged-up as a symptom of "nasty tory cutzz" (copyright BBC) however they are no such thing. They should be as emergency relief but so many people are being referred by GPs, Job Centres etc passing the buck. I defy anyone to say this explosion of food bank attendees can be laid at the VERY TINY adjustments in government budgets however it is obvious that this false conclusion will be drawn as is intended. ...and trumpeted from the rooftops especially by the likes of champagne socialist hypocrites like Polly Toynbee. Interestingly I thought the following far more interesting and truthful (must have been missed by most of the Guardian crowd as there are no hysterical comments):

Yes and no Span,
Its because there are so many unknowns.

We'll just have to see how things pan out.

I conceed that some of the policies this Government is introducing and yes Food Banks were happening under the previous government and party and they also brought in the company that does the tests on the disabled and ill etc...

Gildy, why don't you become a food bank? You seem to have more food in your house than anyone I know!

Would not the bedroom tax be advantageous to you if you could be relocated to something smaller provided, of course, the rent was smaller?

One day it may happen Nick,
Then again if I can ride out the next few years...

Its the old problem, a lack of smaller properties and they keep building 2/3 bedroom new builds so single people/couples are no better for moving.

And they often do not build/adapt decent one bedroom properties as though they just think they'll accept any old thing.

Often it means going into private housing and you lose some security and rents are often higher so it will cost the state more...just that you don't pay it.

Will just have to see what happens next, its all the other changes as a whole that will affect many...

I went to a bedroom tax protest in a nearby town(one of many around the UK)I was the only one who turned up. The rest seemed to be well attended.

I have donated to the local foodbank and I see my store as just that, my own personal food bank.

Hi VQ,
I have posted again...I hope that I have had something new.

I feel as though I am limbo between something nasty happening but still have to hope it will not be as bad as feared.

I know very few people but those who do know me keep telling me all will be well and I will not be homeless so that should give me hope. I hope that they are right.

Wow! You've certainly made up, today, for your recent lack of bloggage.
I'm sure you realise that, although people may not always leave a comment, they still follow you with interest.

Sometimes there is nothing to say or to be added VQ.

I have just read a very thoughtful post on Paul's blog about his lack of faith and passed a comment.

I know we've talked about it sometime ago on mine...

Here's a link(it will have to be cut and pasted)I used to know how put links in a comment but have forgotten.
