Now How Did That Happen?

One thing is baffling me...
It seems the average use of electric but I am using it very sparingly is 4 units per 24 hours. I cannot seem to get it lower than that and for 2-3 hours of gas central heating around 2 units. But I have been taking daily readings from the meters and tonight when I took the reading from the gas meter and compared it to last night's reading, it said I had used 1 unit...

But I haven't had it on for around 48 hours so I don't understand how that unit has been used. As far as I know a meter only moves if you are using what it supplies. It's probably me...

Our provider has a energy check-up service that's free. You call them and they come out and see how you're using your energy and give you suggestions on how you can save. I wonder if your provider has something similar?

I'm phoning in meter readings to get a more accurate idea of what I am using and...what I'll be paying. I have twelve days cooling off peroiod to pull out of things if I decide its not a good deal and when they phone me again next friday that still still leaves four days to say no.

I would be very suspicious of my fridge and freezer's performance to be honest.
Check that they have not got excessive build up of ice/frost unless they're self-defrosting types. Also the age or deterioration in the insulation can lead to them over working to maintain the correct temperature which brings us to whether the thermostats are functioning properly and whether the thermostat settings are set to maintain a too low a temperature? About -18C for the freezer and 0 to 5C for the fridge.
Faulty items such as these can 'drink' electricity if they are 'on' 50% of the day.
Check internal temperatures with a reasonable quality digital thermometer which are readily available on t'internet.

I expect you have a pilot light in your boiler but would that count for a whole unit in that time?

VQ, not all boilers have pilot lights unless they're very old. My new boiler, fitted about 8+ years ago doesn't have one but has Piezo ignition on demand and so uses no gas at rest, whilst idling.
Mine is a floor standing, conventional flue gas boiler made by Ideal Mexico. All boilers nowadays don't have pilot lights any more.

Back to square one, Gildy.

It does have a pilot light so...it might be me.

Its a good system but are the new combi boilers better these days? I hear so many contradictions about whether they are as good as claimed?

If our system was modernised(I say "Our")they told us the last time we'd lose our airing cupboard and the boiler would be taken out of the kitchen and would be upstairs.

How noisy are they?

I didn't want to lose my airing cupboard so I have one on the wall in the kitchen. I still think of it as my new boiler but it's about eleven years old. It has a pilot light, and it will have to stay. It works well so I'm happy with that.

Read this: http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1242929 as it has some interesting facts about costs of pilot lights. Supposed to cost in the order of £20 p.a

There is also a useful link in one of the posts.

I don't think they can make you lose your airing cupboard, we didn't when we had a new boiler fitted, & our new one is much quieter & more fuel efficient.

If/when it has to be changed I think I have no choice being that I rent this property. I'll try not to lose the airing cupboard.

Suppose that's working out at around 2p per day for the pilot light, then the standing charge...no wonder it starts to get expensive...I've always disagreed that you pay a charge for having a meter...

Where I live, the only place for a combi is in the airing cover, so if you want one, it has to go there. So I didn't have one. I like mine...it's very efficient.
