Day Four...

We did not see the Oncologist as we thought we were going to but as I'd raised concerns about Mum's pain killers perhaps not offering pain relief as they should we were given a kind of meeting with someone who had access to Mum's notes and could advise...

They are happy with Mum and how the treatment is going and think they can continue to control it.

If the pain killers stop working or we need something stronger we should take it up with the District Nurse service(or the Oncologist when he does call her back in to revue how the treatment has/is going)
And we do not need to change Mum's diet and can carry on giving all the different variety of good foods that we can think of.

So again more positives than negatives for now.

The last treatment is tomorrow.

I think so VQ...I guess the annoying thing is that RT and Chemo together probably would've wiped it out but for a variety of reasons we only RT but even that can do serious damage to cancer.

So we may get a surprise even yet.

And again we are blessed in that so far it has not seemingly spread.

They could have another shot at it again in the future.

Its the journey that's taking its toll, you wait hours, it takes ages to get there and back home but I still thank the NHS for getting the both of us there.

Mum decided for the final day to use a taxi but in doing so the mini-bus service of the ambulance was closed and the earliest I could phone to cancel was 8.30am and they arrive usually earlier than that.

And I dislike missing them(its like not turning up for an appointment)

But the taxi was booked.

At the last minute Mum decided to finish the week the way we started and go as arranged.

So I had the job of cancelling the taxi but there was plenty of time so it didn't cause problems...

We going to send out for fish and chips tomorrow and I'm just seeing what I can prepare for Mum tonight.

Gildy,
Is your GP in the loop concerning your Mother's treatment - when my husband was receiving chemo, we were only a phone call away from the GP. He made himself aware of what the Oncology Unit was doing and he prescribed pain killers if required. In our case it was quicker than waiting for the District Nurse.

Glad to see you are coping with the situation. It is not easy so I am thinbking of you.

yes, glad thing are going OK..or as OK as can be expected.

btw, it's almost impossible to say if painkillers are working as they should or not, there are no 'level detectors'; the only way to know is stop taking them and finding out the hard way! (don't do that)

Well, the final treatment has just happened...we have a follow up appointment being arranged with the Oncologist which should take place in the next 4-6 weeks.

I'll say more in the next blog entry...

Judith,
I know that the hospitals have kept our GP informed even today we have a copy of a ltter they issue with details of what treatment Mum has received, possible side effects and what action the GP should take if we need to ask for help/drugs.

The people who do the radio therapy have been happy with how the treatment has gone and how Mum has coped.

Thanks to you Span too...the pain may be raised because of the Radio Therapy and when things settle down we may find that they work fine...but taking stronger painkillers does not necessarily meant the condition has become worse.

MacMillan Nurses charity have some wonderful publications well written andone does deal with drugs to control pain.
