I Could Keep My Mouth Shut, Avoiding Criticism...

and flack. But that's not me...

Don't use other people's medicines, its a good rule to follow 99% of the time. Especially, if they are for specific conditions.

Well, though Mum was off sleeping tablets for some time, there have been a few in the house and the dates are still ok. I'm not against them if used properly and I think they have some points in their favour. I am not throwing them out. I have decided to take half tablet once a week or possibly every couple of weeks and at that rate they will last me this year.

Last night whilst I was awake and doing things it had no affect at all but when I did finally put my head on the pillow, I went into a gentle uninterrupted sleep and stayed that way for 6-7 hours and that was very welcome.

I see no harm in what I am doing. I won't be become an addict, if you take them too often, they lose their affect. Then you need more to get the same effect.

Stands back and awaits negative comments...

Update:As I now know the criticism did not happen :-) I can add that I have found some more sleepers! So I will be ok for quite some time into the future...

My Mum had a fair amount of tranquillisers when she left this earth and I used them up very occasionally and never became addicted. They lasted for ages and ages.

No negative comments from me.

Non prescription Piriton is pretty good for getting a good nights sleep too. Sometimes you just need to get a stretch of 6 hours without waking up and Thinking!!!

If you can grow herbs in the garden, then chewing some lemon balm leaves or chive stalks will make you very relaxed and therefore a good sleep should follow.

The old Romany gypsies used to boil up lettuce leaves and drink the tea made from it. I tried it once, it was very soporific. Good tips by the way.

All good tips. They say lavender and hops is another good one(to breathe in)

Its a funny thing but if I was to request sleepers from my Dr, he'd do all he could to put me off even if I said I only want them for occasional use but he gave them quite freely to Mum.

Having read the enclosed leaflet I blame them for the two big falls she had(probably because she took too many)but the side effects in hindsight match up.

Isn't hindsight wonderful(said cynically)

You are quite right Gildy, but I think when you are ill and old sometimes it is a kindness to put you in a sort of dreamworld if t hat makes sense. After all, you cannot put back wear and tear as an old man used to say to me. (I seem to know a lot of old men!)

Same with my Mum. It was lonliness and fear and anxiety she was suffering from. She moved herself back to Ireland when she was fit and in her sixties but it became immensely difficult to give her support being so far away.

Consequently I think her doctor would just give her these anti anxiety pills as short of moving in with her there was not a lot he could do. It is a very difficult situation.

My mum too had a fall, I am sure she was getting confused taking so many tablets and as you said earlier the body builds up a resistance with constant use, so probably more is taken for effect.

PS I have just eaten a bag of sweets and feel very depressed!

If I had been with you I could have helped you either by being the voice of reason or sharing with you :-)

Again, I think that you are spot on with your take about sleepers etc...

Did you have the big breakfast/lunch you predicted, or was it all,"may"?

If you are referring to my post about a cooked breakfast I was talking in general terms when using the term "May" and even then only said it once, I could have said you "Can"

"Picky" porridge sets some up for the day Anon.

How about a signature so we know who we are replying to?

Its a problem isn't it Carol. Its difficult for me and can be a problem for everyone knowing who is who.

I can be picked up on one word.
