Slept Well...

Then again I did not go off until late this morning, I watched  a little more tv via the internet. It's a great idea and I guess there is quite a lot now available on official sites that are legal and reasonable quality supplied by the main broadcasters in the UK and yet some of what I would like to see still seems difficult to find and to be honest where you might let many programmes wash over you if sat in front of a tv, when you have to choose what you watch such a lot is of no interest to me.

I watched a programme "Food Factory" that showed how food manufacturers make certain items that we buy and what we would have to do if we hoped to make our own home made version. We did learn that it is not just as straight forward as boiling sea water to get sea salt flakes though that plays a large part in the process.

Tomato cup a soup does contain tomatoes and how they reduce it down to being a powder(that again was not as easy as it sounds) but involves getting all the water out of the tomatoes(most of what makes up a tomato is water)there is a lot of heat applied. And finally how you make an Orange squash(and yes again there are oranges in there)but the clue is that most squashes on the label will say "Whole" Orange Squash.

And the actually means they have to find a way of not not only releasing the juice but also more from the fruit(a lot that we would just throw out when squeezing them)but still has lots of juice and also the peel contains a similar large amount of orange oil possibly more than the flesh of the fruit. So they find a way to release this, making it very small and mixing it with the juice. And again the volume has to be reduced and boiling is done in a way that avoids it getting burned.

Then of course when we drink the squash or soup we add water again.

I watched the highlights of the dedication and unveiling of the memorial to Bomber Command in London.

Then two programmes from the distant past. The first being "On The Buses" which should be judged by the time it aired and how society was then not now. It's funny how some tv programmes of a similar type are criticised and others like the "Carry On" films are held in the affection of many of the population.

And finally, the second, I made the mistake of watching the start and I wanted to see how it turned out. But the story was padded out, they used a lot of stock footage of Turkey. "The Saint" staring Roger Moore.

The actor Peter Wyngarde(white British male)who later played a character called Jason King in two other popular series' of the time appeared heavily covered in brown make up with false moustache playing an arab which probably would not be allowed these days. Don't know if there was anything sinister in that, it might  have been a lack of actors of that race being available, budget reasons or the same actors were used over and over.

Kenneth Williams used to appear as an Indian Raj and I have never heard of complaints about that or there has been I have missed them.
We all know in time it stopped...and one of the biggest casualties in the change of attitude to such matters was when the long running Black and White Minstrels show came to an end.

I saw a production of that on stage many years ago in Bournemouth and one turn whilst they had a break from singing was Les Dennis and Dustin Gee and the other? None other than Lenny Henry who was just starting out in show business. Now he would not consider appearing on such a show but he also committed a sin that few if any performer would...he apologised because he thought he had not been very good.

It's another day and nothing much different planned and once again, it is cold, wet and dull weather wise. So I'll wait until tomorrow before I go out and have a reason(to have my blood tests taken at the Dr's surgery)

Food Factory is on BBC1 on Monday nights at 7.30. The one you watched was on last week, it was the 1st one, and the one last night was the 2nd. There are 6 programmes altogether.

Anon, I have always had an interest in science and food so this has a bit of both, I can put up with the inclusion of minor celebs but realise its the same series once hosted in a more straight forward way by Jimmy Doherty who was himself a bit of a celeb for a time as television followed him trying to make a success of a farm.

I saw the first series but appear to have missed the second. I probably would prefer the series if the format was less showbizzy but they must think it is needed to bring in a larger audience. Or perhaps they just wanted it to look totally different and have no simularities with how it used to be.

I have noticed when I choose TV programmes to watch on the net most are factual as opposed to entertainment.
