Sometimes You Have To Conceed...

that you can't beat supermarket prices.

I mentioned making my own bread again...and VQ told me I can still do it even if I don't have the heating on so the dough rises...

But the other day I found four small baguettes(still quite large for a single person)being sold at £1 for four(price reduction)You put them in the freezer and get them out when required and warm them up in the oven. I could not probably make them for that price.

They say put them in the freezer on the day of purchase but as they were not in a chilled cabinet, the date for selling them is up to May 31st I have put them in the fridge for now, they'll probably be used before then but in theory I could put what's left in the freezer near the sell by date and they'll still be OK a month later.

I think the same is true of most things put in the freezer, if you put it in a few weeks before the sell by/use by date the month will start earlier than if I put it into the freezer nearer the date.

To make drinking some fruit squash more interesting I am now adding some bottled fizzy water but I have still water too(though I am happy to use tap water too)but 2 litres for 18p...

Doesn't seem to be much healthy food in your purchases GS. Where is the fruit, fresh veggy etc. Why not buy some baking potatoes and have these with Baked Bean, Tuna etc. Not too much of the fatty belly of Pork, I should say. More lettuce and salad stuff wouldn't go amiss.

Thanks Nick ;-)

Actually I eat less meat anyhow without "my" condition but too much meat makes the kidneys work harder and...I lose protein...

I have no idea if I'll be medically ok in the future that's in God's hands and my Consultant, nor how long I have, I just try to eat sensibly and get a good variety of food into me.

Also in case one day my diet becomes very bland and I have to cut out certain foods or eat special ones...

I have fish in the freezer(Prawns, salmon, cod)Off the top of my head.

Chicken, a little belly pork, pork mince.

Frozen veg and salad stuff(lettuce, spinich, celery, tomato, spring onions)

Sliced ham.

Soup, potatoes, eggs, baked beans and so on.

I had a salad yesterday.

Fresh fruit(Bananas, pears, apples and strawberries)

And in cereals I have(the dates are ok on them)I may have to look for other brands in the future(we'll see)Special K, porridge, bran flakes, cornflakes, honey loops, fruit and fibre, and a couple of others.

Loads of tea bags, coffee, fruit juices and squashes plus some fizzy water/still water.

I have gone back to semi skimmed milk(fresh and UHT)as I don't always ghet through the fresh milk. I'll just try to keep the cupboards and fridge freezer topped up and watch the dates on the items...

In time I may find that I don't need to be as stocked up as I am now.

I am am sometimes eating less or spreading it throughout the day(smaller portions)or have a decent meal and not much else or just have a quick snack.

I don't necessarily need two meals a day...I was having bacon sandwiches at 4am this morning just to use the bacon up.

A jacket potato with beans or cheese or something would be fine.

If I have another full meal in the next day or two(You know...meat and two veg)I have some Kurley Kale too.

Oh, that all sounds great then. Would you give me a hint of what your 'conditon' is and how old you are?
I'm 74, and left work 20 years ago next month. my firm relocated to S.Wales and didn't want to leave S.London and so I took severance pay and retired at an early age.

My kidneys minute filters are damaged and I also leak protein and do not always get rid of the toxins in the blood. My immune system thinks that my kidneys are not my own and without the steroids etc...they can become inflamed. They dampen that down.

Then I have immune suppressents to stop the immune system attacking them(drugs normally given to people who have had a transplant to avoid the body rejecting the new organ)

Water tablets to stop water retention.

Blood pressure tablets.

I usually avoid talking of age but as many know/guessed Mum's age and because of what I talk about and references I make, I am in my mid 50's.

Time marches on...

Of course I forgot to mention that I do find walking difficult and painful. And tasks around the house possibly originally caused by the condition but probably the years of being on strong drugs and it's a trade off. It's arthritic like.

I can become very stiff and without my walking stick I can really struggle, I can struggle with the stick.

I dislike attempting to go onto the ground to attempt to pick things up and it can take a lot of holding on to things to get up.

Getting down to attempt to cut toenails is such an effort or getting dressed can be...
