Kettles!

I recycle as much as the next person(hopefully more so)but one thing I do seem to go through more than most is kettles!

What's wrong with them these days? I've tried expensive kettles, inexpensive kettles and all kinds in between. They always me lasted me years.

I've descaled them with prepared products specially for the job. I've used lemon juice. I have even tried not using anything and still they fail me and seemingly within months now.

Last weekend, the kettle managed to knock all the electric off across the whole house and when its late at night, its not welcome when your pc and television and whatever else goes off. Usually, if something fails just the circuit the faulty item is on goes down but this took the whole system down.

So today I went to Argos and bought the lowest priced kettle that they do £5.49 I think. "Would like to have an extended warranty on your purchased item?" What at that price? And besides whilst its away being repaired what do I do? No, if it goes wrong in say 6 months...I'll just come back in and if the item is still available at that price, I'll buy another.

Are they adding something in the water? Why are they all failing so easily these days. All I do is boil water for a cup of tea or coffee. I'm not doing anything strange. Seeing all that each kettle is just a plastic body with a metal element, the elements seem to be wearing out easily.

Even the old immersion heaters element lasts longer and it is in water all the time. I think the same element will have been in the immersion heater for over 25 years, much longer. Though now, it is quicker and easier to use the gas boiler.

We may think modern technology like computers etc...to be a nuisance sometimes but simple gadgets can be just as annoying and troublesome.

Funny you should say that Gildy. I've bought a few kettles in the last year. I always used to prefer the old metal whistlers but then we got the ubiquitous plastic electric stand-up type that sits in its base - yuck, but then I bought a really nice 60 quid jobby that looked like the old type but was really the new type...when I went back in July it was destroyed because my sister in law (clash of cultures?) put it on the gas instead of on it's pretty base...what a stink (burning plastic, and took ages to clean the hob too!

I got another pretty expensive metal one (still electric standup in base type) so it wouldn't be confused for the old whistler!

Gildy, I bought a water filter (Britas) for the cats !
I've found my kettles last much longer since I've only been putting filtered water in them.
I've got one of those jug kettles where the element is hidden.

What a thought...plastic melted all over a cooker...

Next time that might be an idea to invest in what you have suggested Curmy...

I've never known them to fail as much as they have suddenly started to.

The last two that I purchased were the kind where the element is hidden and still they packed up.

And you could see where the metal concealing the element had been damaged.

You know how much the new kettle cost me? £5.48. And that's why I thought it ridiculous to be offered a warranty on it.

It makes a cup of tea or coffee and that's all that matters ;-)

I have used the same kettle for more than 25 years. It was designed by Alessi, a
genius Italian. Not electric.
When kettle boils it makes a two tone screech, I have to use an oven cloth to press the burning handle to open it.
But it's still a beautiful looking
object, and although there are later models which are now unbelievably expensive, I am sort of in love my kettle.
It's a part of my past and could tell many a story. I'll never change it.

Well, Rupe, as long as you don't make a two tone screech, that's all that matters !
